Finish Dishwasher Detergent Tub + Fabric Circles = Awesome Vase

The title pretty much says it all. Today, I'll show you how I took what I previously considered to be trash, and turned it into a sensational vase for my master bathroom water closet.

We use Finish detergent in our house, which we buy at (where else?) Costco. Anyone else have these cardboard tubs in their home? I normally throw these bad boys away once they are empty, but this time I decided to hang onto it.

I almost painted the tub, but at the last minute decided to break in my new circle cutter, which I had purchased at Michael's for about $10 after a 40% off coupon.

I had leftover fabric from my table runner project, so I quickly got to work cutting 2" diameter fabric circles.

I sliced enough circles in half to cover the top and bottom edges. Using my hot glue gun, I glued the half circles end-to-end.

Starting at the bottom, I glued full size circles all of the way around my tub, staggering the circles to ensure full coverage. Make sure you only use a small amount of glue at the top of the circle, so that the edges hang free.

I continued like this all of the way to the top of the tub.

I had some decorative rope lying around, so I looped it around the top a few times and tied it off in a quadruple knot.

Voila!! The result is a delightfully recycled vase. You could even keep the plastic lid and use it as decorative storage. For now, I'm using it in the water closet of my master bathroom, which will soon be getting a fun paint treatment in shades of gray. Stay tuned for that fun project!

Cheers!

  1. What a clever idea! I love the idea of reusing things (like the detergent container) to make new things!

  2. Now that is a cute idea! I'm always throwing those large tubs away that I get at Sam's. Now I'll have to rethink doing that. Thanks for sharing.
